In addition to launching a partner program for WiFi hotspot operators – Skype Access, the popular VoIP services provider also announced a Mobile Partner Program for operators in markets with low 3G broadband penetration. The idea is to bring the “Skype experience” to a broad range of mobile users, while at the same time enabling carriers to differentiate their offerings from their competition. The new program comes on the heels of successful operator partnerships that Skype has already launched with Verizon, KDDI and Hutchison 3.
Under the Mobile Partner Program, Skype will provide carrier partners with a purpose built, mobile bandwidth-friendly client/server solution that works on a broad range of handsets, smartphones and feature phones included.
The first mobile operator to jump on board is Qtel Group, which will offer Skype through its mobile broadband subsidiary wi-tribe in Jordan and the Philippines. Skype and wi-tribe will distribute Skype credit vouchers in the two countries, allowing customers to enjoy free calls to landlines and mobiles over Skype using the wi-tribe mobile broadband network.
