HTC Thunderbolt up for Best Buy pre-order, SVDO limits leak
Best Buy on Sunday became the first with a pre-order page for the HTC Thunderbolt and its first details. The 4G Android leader can be set aside at the store for a $50 deposit. It doesn't yet have clues as to Verizon's release date or price.
Recent scoops have clued in the possibility that the Thunderbolt will be ready to sell February 14. It could be one of Verizon's most expensive phones ever as it could cost as much as $250 on a contract.
Along with the pricing, Electronista has learned why Verizon has decided to downplay the SVDO support that lets the Thunderbolt use 3G data while on a call. Sources aware of Verizon's testing say the technique used leads to data being much slower than it would be otherwise, leading the carrier to issue the warnings to avoid mentioning the feature unless asked. The technique is believed to use 1X RTT data for voice and EVDO for its 3G data, effectively creating two simultaneous data connections rather than piggybacking voice and data on one.
The contacts didn't say whether or not SVDO would migrate to other Verizon phones, though the current state of affairs would make this unlikely until the slowdown or any other bug is resolved. [Best Buy info via Droid-Life]
